Oh my the anticipation,
is killing me! I am stressed but so excited for this upcoming Tet Festival. I would never imagine myself to be playing such a large role so early in the game. I have met so many helpful folks that have shown me the passion and drive to continue with what I am doing. It’s been such an amazing bonding experience to work with seasoned staff members who have been volunteering their time every...

Bolsa Avenue
I remember sitting in the backseat of my mom’s old light blue Dodge Caravan as a young kid. It was the older version of what my mom has now. The fact the older van had 3 doors, my siblings often would race to the sliding door whenever we got to our destination. My dad would often drive during our trips to Orange County. The stereos blaring either old Cambodian tape cassettes that my parents...

Ready or Not?
This time last year, I was in a different place.  My life was filled with sadness and immense grief. My world was completely upside down. I saw the ugly that controlled our lives while everyone was oblivious to it. It became clear to me, that life is more than what it seems or what you may make of it.  It hit me hard. If you want anything in life, you’re going to have to work your...

The Other Woman
has the worst image of some crazy adulteress in some sheer piece of lingerie.  In my case, I am wearing my comfy sweatpants and washed out tee while sitting in front of my old school white macbook. I don’t desire to win your heart over or even arouse your parts, whatever you may possess. Nope, it’s not the case with me.  I am the other woman that is helping your beau out of the mess,...

A College's Name: How important is it?
Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, UCLA, UC Berkeley are the names that come to mind when I think of a prestigious school. Just hearing the school attach to someone’s name makes them “appear” smarter than the norm.  I know I dwell on college life way too much, but it came to my attention once more when I was editing my sister’s personal statement last night. She had no...

Would you drop a friend, if...
They weren’t being the kind of friend you were being to them? The answer for me is: yes. I feel friendship is a two-person relationship and if you can’t live up to your end of the friendship, it’s not worth keeping. Am I being a little too insensitive here? Perhaps, but to be honest people change. If you’re holding onto this friend you made 10 years ago and both...

Introducing Malissa Tem of Los Angeles
blogkhmerican: Malissa Tem has a natural instinct for storytelling, to the point that she feels her current path as a journalism student and freelance reporter found her rather than her choosing it. She takes a meticulous approach to her work, making such extensive notes that she can feel overwhelmed by the story she’s trying to cover. However, she believes the Khmerican is a fitting venue for...

Reading Palms
I like the feeling of lying in bed with a good book in my hands. Lately it’s been more just one, actually more like a handful of great books. I read for the sheer admiration of authors and their intricate minds. What inspires them to write? Yes, I have asked this question to many of my mentors.  There have been several different responses. Too many in fact that my sleep deprived brain...

Positive Energies
After a few missed calls, my mom finally called me back yesterday while I was having dinner with my beau.  “Mak, my article got on Khmerican.com!” She instinctively grabbed her prized iPad2 and quickly went to the search engines.“Khmer (you know how to spell that) and i-c-a-n .com “ The phone went silent for a bit and then I told her I’ll call her back. My mom...

Life As You Know It
Call me a workaholic or call me just fabulous.  Things are beginning to stack up in my life. I am compiling lists of things to do and getting through them quickly. The more efficient I am with getting through it, the better I am on the long haul.  This past weekend I met with the editors of Khmerican.com during the Khmer Student Coalition Conference at UCLA.It was a different experience from all...

The Lingering
I took my plate of rice, beans, and quesadilla from the food server before the hoards of hungry college students inched towards the glass case of the student cafeteria. I have been traveling towards this dining place too many times in the past few weeks. I am not sure if it is the frequent neglect of packing a homemade lunch or my desire to eat 3-star meals. Nothing wrong with dining on the fly...

Thank you for the support
I spoke to two different editors today, and my prayers were answered. I will be working on freelancing for two different online news outlets. Both are relatively small, but I am excited because it’s given me so much play room with the pieces I produce. I will be writing and doing photography for both. This will be in addition to working on the Non Song magazine with my partner in crime. I...

I hate anticipating emails.  BUT  I am the worst hypocrite because I hate sending out emails.  I totally forgot to send in my monies for the Khmer Student Coalition Conference. I hope I can still sign up :(

Week 1 Update
Midterms are over and I have to admit it’s been really hard to curb my diet. However, I have resisted the urge to binge eat and allow myself to constantly snack on food for the whole day. I thought it was a silly idea, but I find myself less hungry around bigger meals.  One of my bad habits in the past was to eat everything on my plate. My mom told me that it’s wasteful to throw away...
